Having investigated living languages of world and by adopting new methods of studying language, functional linguistics brought to light universal parameters of transitivity. On other part, analytical psychology, through a detailed analysis of human psyche, introduced universal psychological patterns, or psychological ‘types’. Considering the existence of transitivity parameters in most languages, on one hand, and archaic nature of psychological types, on other hand, we decided to analyze relationship between the psychological types of two characters from novel Tarlan—based on two attitudes types of "introversion" and "extroversion"—and scale of transitivity of the dialogues and author's descriptions of the characters. The two main research questions were as follows: a) what role does language play in representing psychology of characters of the story?; and, b) how can we identify and analyze psychological type of characters based on transitivity structures in language of the story? We drew on two theories, namely structure and parameters of transitivity by Hopper and Thompson, and personality typology by Jung. Analysis of research data showed that dominant mental attitude was of the "introverted" type in Tarlan's personality and of "extroverted" type in Rana's personality. We then examined the transitivity of dialogues and clauses of both characters and finally came to conclusion that a person's psychological traits not only shape their disposition, behavior and character, but also affect their language and how it is used. The transitivity of clauses related to extroverted characters had higher transitivitywhile clauses related to introverted characters had a lower transitivity in most parameters.
