Abstract
It is inferred from Jahiz’s book that rhetoric was among the sciences that emerged after Islam. The word “balaghat” has two meanings: a) speaking according to existing conditions, which has different degrees and may be even folksy. b) Speech higher than common. The meaning here should be exalted and lofty; otherwise, it would look prosaic and commonplace, unless the speaker intends it to be so. It is to be noted that the existing conditions refer to those of speaker, listener and meaning as well as time and place.
